Vocal Feminization: Finding your range

You know how Mickey Mouse sounds? Very high pitched, but very fake. That's becasue a voice like that is done in falsetto.

Falsetto is a term used in singing. It's from the Latin word for "deceive" and means false. It's an artificial way of pushing a voice beyond its natural range (or register). It usually has a soft, nasally quality. Think Bee Gees or Frankie Valli.

Everyone has a certain point in their voice where they can't sing any higher in their natural voice. This is then note where their voice switches from their normal register to falsetto. Singers call this the passagio or break.

We need to find this point. The key is to talk in as high a voice as you can in your natural register. That is your base note.

Exercise 8A

Time for that tape recorder. This is a biggie.

Our last exercise had you saying HHHAH in your regular voice.

Now we are going to sing HHHAH as we go up the scale.

  1. Start on any note you want.
  2. Sing HHHAH.
  3. Sing the next note up the scale.
  4. Continue up the scale until you can't sing HHHAH without it breaking.
  5. Your voice will sound like it's breaking. You'll sound like an adolescent whose voice is changing or like a honking goose.
  6. Hold the breaking note for a second
  7. Sing the note just below on the scale.

This is your note! Yay!

Exercise 8B

Sing this note for a long time into the recorder. See if you can match it when you play back. Sing along with yourself. Now, while it's fresh in your mind, rewind back to the start of your tape and record it at the very beginning. You don't have to do it as one note, but put about 30 seconds of it at the start of the tape for reference later. Whenever you record yourself after this, leave some of the original note at the beginning.

After a week or so, redo the exercises above to find your note. As you get better, your vocal range will increase. Eventually, your base note will go up.

When that happens, move your voice up, and keep adjusting it as necessary until you like the note you're using.
